St Pauls Philippines takes the faithful through the Way of the Cross in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

MANILA, Philippines – At about this time in previous years, during Holy Week, the Catholic faithful flocked to churches and other pilgrimage sites to pray the  Stations of the Cross as a way of commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This year, though, marks the first time in the history of Christendom most Holy Week activities will be done in the confines of houses because of the scourge of COVID-19 now sweeping across the globe.

The way people worship may be different, but the flame of their fervor still burns in the same intensity.

The Stations of the Cross, also called the Way of the Cross or the Via Crucis, has 14 “stations” or images that depict the scenes of Jesus’ way to Calvary. Devotees walk to each of these stations to reflect and to offer a short prayer.  (READ: The stories behind the Passion of Jesus)

St Pauls Philippines and St Pauls Audiovisuals have produced a virtual Stations of the Cross with the theme: “The Way of the Cross: Pathway to Dialogue,” in commemoration of the year of Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue and leading to the celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.

This online Via Crucis is set at the St. Agustin Parish, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, which is under the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia.
