MANILA, Philippines – Four members of an elite Army unit were wounded following a clash with suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Basilan on Thursday, March 15.
Initial reports from the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) said soldiers belonging to the Army’s 4th Scout Ranger Battalion (4SRB) clashed with alleged terrorists in Barangay Baiwas, Sumisip town shortly before 5 pm Thursday.
Westmincom spokesman Lt Col Randy Cabangbang said the embattled unit was conducting “support operations” for another unit when it was attacked by armed men.
The wounded soldiers are expected to be airlifted to a military hospital in Zamboanga City.
