MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III joined world leaders in mourning the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

In a statement released Monday evening, April 8, Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said, “We join the people of the United Kingdom as they mark the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, who left an indelible imprint on British politics and society during her more than a decade as Prime Minister.”

“As the first, and to date, only female premier of the UK, she proved a formidable leader on the world stage,” Lacierda said.

Thatcher died at the age of 87 on Monday following a stroke.

Known as Britain’s Iron Lady, Thatcher is the country’s first woman premier. She is credited for shaping a generation of British politics, and is hailed as a right-wing titan and key figure in the Cold War.

World leaders have mourned her passing, with British Prime Minister David Cameron declaring, “We have lost a great leader.”
