The Corona trial is an event 8 out of 10 Filipinos follow, but don't understand, says Pulse Asia

MANILA, Philippines – At least 8 out of 10 Filipinos follow the Corona impeachment trial, but don’t understand fully.

The latest Pulse Asia “Ulat ng Bayan” survey, released Tuesday, March 20, showed that despite a high percentage of Filipinos (84%) following the current impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, a small majority say they know little about it.

The survey, conducted February 26 to March 9, 2012, said overwhelming majorities across geographic areas and socioeconomic classes monitor the developments in the trial.

Despite this, 56% of those surveyed admitted they know little about what’s being tackled in the Senate impeachment court. At least 11% of respondents said they don’t know anything about it.

Guilty or not

On the other hand, Pulse Asia said nearly half of those surveyed (47%) view Corona as guilty, while a majority of the remaining half of the survey respondents (43%) are undecided.

A small percentage (5%) of respondents said Corona is innocent of the charges.

For both sides, majority formed their opinion on the matter during the impeachment trial (in particular, 64% for those who say he is innocent, 66% for those who say he is guilty).

Pulse Asia said the survey was conducted nationwide, based on a sample of 1,200 representative adults 18 years old and above, with a +/- 3 error margin at 95% confidence level.

The survey firm said no group influenced the survey. “Pulse Asia undertakes Ulat ng Bayan surveys on its own without any party singularly commissioning the research effort,” it added.

Survey suspect?

Asked to comment, Ramon Esguerra, one of Corona’s counsels, said: “If that is any indication, the results show either how divided we are or a larger segment of our people are not really too interested in the trial.”

Esguerra however said the “survey is suspect.” He did not elaborate except to add that he hoped the results were not released to “sway the vote of the independent senators.”
