MANILA, Philippines – Here are the highlights of Day 32 of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
2:13 pm: Session starts. Roll call: 16 senator-judges present.
2:16 pm: Senator-judge Teofisto Guingona III asks defense clarificatory questions. He asks about the entries made by CJ Corona in his SALNs.
2:23 pm: Prosecution says they won’t do a cross examination of witness Benz Lim anymore; Meanwhile, defense proceeds to ask additional direct examination questions for the witness.
Witness, property manager of The Columns condominium building, presents additional documents regarding a condominium unit in the said building under the name of Mrs Cristina Corona.
2:39 pm: Senator-judge Sergio Osmeña III asks clarificatory questions.
2:48 pm: Senator-judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago asks clarificatory questions to Lim, prosecution, and defense regarding the acceptance, ownership of condominium property.
3:08 pm: Senator-judge Franklin Drilon asks clarificatory questions, still regarding the Columns property.
3:14 pm: Session suspended. Defense prepares for next witness.
3:17 pm: Session resumes. Carmina Cruz, customer relations officer of The Columns, is next witness. She will testify that the condominium unit was accepted by the Coronas in 2009.
3:52 pm: Cruz is temporarily discharged, and is instructed to return in the next session with documents still related to the acceptance of the Columns unit by the Coronas.
3:53 pm: Session suspended.
4:24 pm: Session resumes. Next witness for the defense is lawyer Perlita Ele, to prove the basis of the non-inclusion of the McKinley Hill property in CJ Corona’s SALNs. Ele is the clerk of court at the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.
4:35 pm: Prosecution cross examines Ele.
4:41 pm: Prosecution defers continuation of cross examination of Ele, until she brings some requested documents to court. Session suspended.
4:50 pm: Session resumes. Next witness is Atty Eulalio Diaz III, administrator of the Land Registration Authority (LRA), who testifies regarding the alleged 45 properties owned by the Chief Justice. Prosecution tries to object to presenting Diaz, saying it is not relevant, but Enrile allows testimony.
5:12 pm: Session suspended.
5:13 pm: Session resumes. Direct examination continues. Diaz testifies to the status of the different land titles under the list of 45 alleged properties owned by the Coronas.
5:27 pm: Senator-judge Francis Escudero manifests, asks clarificatory question: where is the testimony going? Defense says to show CJ doesn’t have 45 properties under his name. Defense, prosecution suggested to discuss the issue on the land titles outside court on Wednesday.
5:34 pm: Senator-judge Jinggoy Estrada asks clarificatory questions to Diaz.
5:42 pm: Senator-judge Joker Arroyo manifests, says he is bothered by the “cavalier” attitude of Diaz and the prosecution. He proceeds to ask Diaz several questions regarding how he came up with the list of properties. Arroyo adds, by making the list Diaz “practically” charged the Coronas of owning all the properties. He also interrogates the prosecution.
“You misled the public,” Arroyo tells prosecution.
5:57 pm: Tupas explains prosecution’s side on the issue.
6:02 pm: Clarificatory questions from senator-judges Guingona, Pia Cayetano, Loren Legarda. All focus on the LRA administrator. Diaz instructed to return to next session, to continue cross examination.
