DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A suspected guerilla fighter of the New People’s Army was killed in a firefight in the typhoon-devastated town of New Bataan, Compostela Valley on Thursday morning, April 25, a military official said.

Col Leopoldo Galon Jr, chief of the military’s 5th Civil Relations Group, said elements from the 66th IB encountered at least 30 heavily armed fighters of the NPA in Barangay Magangit at around 9 in the morning.

There are no reported casualties from the government side while a body of a suspected NPA rebel was recovered at the site of the firefight.

Six high-powered firearms were also recovered in the area, Galon said.

Two MG250 attack helicopters also conducted close air support for the state security forces engaged in the firefight. – Rappler.com
