MANILA, Philippines – Here are the highlights of Day 33 of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
2:14 pm: Session starts. Roll call: 19 senator-judges present.
2:21 pm: Alveo Land’s Carmina Cruz returns to the witness stand, bringing with her additional documents still related to The Columns property of the Coronas. Defense continues direct examination.
2:39 pm: No cross examination from the prosecution, reiterating their stand that deed of sale already shows ownership of condominium unit. Cruz is then discharged.
2:41 pm: Clarificatory questions from Senator-judge Francis Escudero, regarding acceptance of property.
2:47 pm: Session suspended.
2:48 pm: Session resumes. Atty Perlita Ele, clerk of court for the Quezon City Regional Trial Court, is back at the witness stand, to present additional documents related to the notary public, in connection with McKinley property allegedly owned by the Chief Justice.
2:49 pm: Session suspended again to let Ele prepare the documents she brought to court.
2:55 pm: Session resumes. Ele presents documents to the court, related to the appointment of notary public Maynard Panela, who notarized documents related to the McKinley property. No more cross examination, redirect examination. Ele is discharged.
3:00 pm: Court ready for next witness, Land Registration Authority (LRA) administrator Eulalio Diaz. Lengthy discussion between defense, prosecution about the number of the alleged properties of the Coronas: defense says only 5, prosecution says 21.
Presiding Officer Juan Ponce Enrile then orders both sides to submit memoranda on the matter. Lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas also suggests submission of evidence to show Coronas’ ownership of the properties.
3:35 pm: Session suspended.
3:36 pm: Session resumes. Diaz back at witness stand for additional direct examination from the defense.
3:47 pm: Defense ends additonal direct examination. Clarificatory questions from senator-judges. First up, Senator-judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who asks about Diaz’s background and motivation for issuing the document. A livid Santiago scolds Diaz about the way he handled the request.
4:02 pm: Senator-judge Loren Legarda asks about her request for a “more accurate” list of properties under the CJ’s name. She also asks some questions for the prosecution, specifically Rep Niel Tupas.
4:14 pm: Senator-judge Ferdinand Marcos Jr asks clarificatory questions for LRA’s Diaz. Marcos also grills Diaz about the motivation and circumstances surrounding the release of the list of alleged Corona properties. Legarda, then Enrile, also joins Marcos in the questioning, says she is confused about the LRA official’s pronouncements. Enrile later says Diaz’s story is doubtful.
4:40 pm: Senator-judge Pia Cayetano asks Diaz some clarificatory questions. Cayetano and Enrile also ask Tupas some additional clarificatory questions.
4:58 pm: Session suspended.
5:02 pm: Session resumes. Senator-judge Jinggoy Estrada manifests, asks clarificatory questions for Diaz. Diaz says he is not “in cahoots” with the prosecution. Estrada is followed by Senator-judge Ralph Recto, who asks some questions regarding the properties to both the defense and prosecuton.
5:21 pm: Diaz is discharged. Majority leader Senator-judge Vicente Sotto III informs court, defense to continue presentation of witnesses in next session.
5:22 pm: Session adjourned. Trial to resume on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at 2 pm. – Rappler.com
