MANILA, Philippines – A potential cyclone was spotted 100km north of Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan Saturday morning as tropical depression Dante continued to maintain its strength.

But not to worry. Like Dante, weather bureau PAGASA said the low pressure area (LPA) hovering above the West Philippine Sea is not expected to make landfall should it develop into a storm as it moves northward.

Weather forecaster Gladys Saludes said the LPA is expected to bring rain to the western part of the Visayas, as well as Luzon.

Both Dante and the LPA are still too far away to have any direct impact to the weather in the country but they can bring moderate to heavy rain as they enhance the flow of the southwest monsoon, as well as the intertropical convergence zone in Mindanao.

Dante is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday.

Expect a cloudy and rainy weekend as PAGASA continues to monitor developments.

Despite the increased presence of weather disturbances within PAR, Saludes said this does not mark the onset of the rainy season just yet.

The weather bureau follows a criteria in announcing the official start of the rainy season. PAGASA has to monitor a total rainfall amount of 25mm or more within 3 consecutive days having at least 1mm of rainfall per day. – Rappler.com
