The regional police office's only helicopter – delivered just last month – crashes on Mount Bitulayungan in Tinglayan town, Kalinga
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Three police officers were injured when the only helicopter of the Police Regional Office of the Cordillera Administrative Region (PROCOR) crashed on Mount Bitulayungan, Barangay Butbut, in the town of Tinglayan, Kalinga, on Wednesday, June 19.

The chopper with tail number RP 2045 (Robinson R44 type) was piloted by PCI Dexter Vitug, Air Unit member. His passengers were identified as Sr Supt Oliver Enmodias, chief of the Regional Operations & Plans Division of PROCOR, and PO3 Jude Edwin Duque, Air Unit member.

Cordillera police said the chopper came from the Kalinga police headquarters and was headed for a ceremonial marijuana eradication activity. It encountered mechanical problems when it was about to land at the Advance Command Post. It crashed at around 11:15 am.

“As a result, the chopper collapsed, resulting in damages to its rotors and body frame,” the report said.

The police report said the impact of the crash caused the chopper to turn over several times, damaging its rotors and body frame. Aside from mechanical problems, “strong wind and the chopper’s heavy load are being eyed as probable causes of the accident,” it said.

The three police officers  incurred minor injuries and they were airlifted and evacuated by the Air Force to Tabuk City for medical treatment while the chopper was left at the site.

The Robinson R44 helicopter was one of the 3 purchased in 2009. The purchase was considered anomalous after it was revealed that the choppers were passed off as brand new but were actually second-hand. Eleven police officers in Camp Crame were fired for the anomalous transaction.

The two remaining R44s were unusable as they were being used as evidence in court. – Rappler.com
