MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang is hopeful the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front will finally agree on remaining key issues of a proposed peace deal when talks resume in July.
“We hope that there will be a good resolution to the talks,” said Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte in a radio interview.
“We’re making sure — at least from the government side — that all details will be fixed, and that we’ll be well-prepared,” she added.
Government peace panel chair Miriam Coronel-Ferrer said in a statement on Friday, June 21 that panel chairs had agreed on a date next month to further discuss contentious issues.
Eight months after the signing of the Framework Agreement that outlined the vision for a new Bangsamoro, talks reached a deadlock over annexes on wealth and power sharing between the national and regional governments.
The peace panels have so far completed only one of 4 annexes needed for the final peace pact — the annex on Transitional Arrangements and Modalities. Apart from the annexes on wealth and power sharing, the panels still have to finish the one on normalization, which includes sensitive issues such as policing and decommissioning.
The delay frustrated MILF leaders and members, but Valte explained the government has been carefully studying the proposal to avoid mistakes seen in the past.
“Again, we are fully committed in the peace process. We want these annexes and the agreement to pass legal muster that’s why it is thoroughly evaluated and studied,” she said. – Rappler.com
