'Let’s just wait for the SONA to be delivered and you, yourselves, can listen and understand what’s the intention of the President in his upcoming SONA,' says presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda

MANILA, Philippines — What is the government doing to make sure economic growth benefits the poor and jobless?

“I will ask the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines to listen to the State of the Nation Address (SONA). Listen to the SONA properly,” presidential spokersperson Edwin Lacierda said on Sunday, July 21, in response to bishops’ call for the government to “do more for the poor.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes noted that about a third of Filipinos continue to live in poverty.

“Let’s just wait for the SONA to be delivered and you, yourselves, can listen and understand what’s the intention of the President in his upcoming SONA,” Lacierda added.

President Benigno Aquino III will deliver his State of the Nation Address (SONA) Monday afternoon, July 22.

Lacierda also responded to statements made by Alliance of Concerned Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio that the group is giving President Aquino a failing grade for his unsatisfactory performance in improving the country’s educational system.

“Alliance of Concerned Teachers has always been contrarian to the President and his administration. Of course, they will never say anything that the President has done for the education sector. Let’s just listen to the SONA. We have improved so many things in the education department,” he said.

“There are concerns, there are many challenges. We have 3 years left, We have challenges and we will face those challenges. In the meantime, in fairness to this administration, ACT should not be so blind as to only what it wants to critique,” he added. — Rappler.com
