The Aquino administration appeals to North Korea to be a 'better neighbor'

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Philippine government condemned North Korea’s failed rocket launch.

In a statement on Friday, April 13, the Foreign Affairs Department said North Korea proceeded with its planned launch of the long-range rocket in defiance of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1695 (2006), 1874 (2009) and 1718 (2006).

“For these reasons, the Philippines deplores the launch, notwithstanding its failure.”

Manila urged Pyongyang to abide by the UN Security Council resolutions and abandon weapons of mass destruction, and ballistic missile programs “in a complete verifiable, and irreversible manner.”

“The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) should reconsider its current path of isolation from the international community. The Philippines strongly urges the DPRK to desist from acts of provocation and to end its use or testing of ballistic missile technology.”

The department added, “The Philippines reiterates its readiness to work with international partners in the effort to ensure peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.”

Malacañang ‘happy’ over failed launch

Earlier Friday, Malacañang said it’s “happy” over reports that North Korea’s rocket launch failed.

“We are happy that no harm came out of the failed launch,” said Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte.

She added that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has lowered the red alert “but will continue to be on hand to render any assistance necessary.”

Valte added: “We remind North Korea that we all share this planet, and urge it to be a better neighbor.” – Rappler.com
