MANILA, Philippines – Jewel Lobaton, wife of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel,” is calling it quits on their 13-year marriage.

On September 4 at a Quezon City court, the former Bb Pilipinas-Universe filed a petition to annul her marriage to the solon, according to ABS-CBN News. Through a raffle, the case went to Judge Jose Bautista of the QC Family Court.

Despite denying being a battered wife during the height of the 2013 mid-term elections when Pimentel was seeking re-election, Lobaton now cites Pimentel’s abusive nature as the reason for the petition.

“We have cited several instances that show that there have been abuses from day one of the wedding up to the day of the separation, and continuing up to the present,” her legal counsel, Atty Salvador Panelo, told ABS-CBN.

Lobaton and Pimentel married in 2000 – years after Pimentel topped the bar in 1990 and she was crowned beauty queen in 1998.

They began living separately in November 2011. In May 2012, Pimentel officially announced their separation calling it the”most difficult public pronouncement I will ever be making in my entire life.”

They have two boys aged 8 and 3. It was for the boys’ sake that Lobaton hesitated to file for annulment. ABS-CBN also quotes her as saying she wanted to give the relationship “a try, a chance.”

Lobaton’s camp also plans to file a temporary protection order against the senator. She says she tried to reach Pimentel before filing the petition, but he chose not to grant her an audience. – Rappler.com
