This is how Day 5 of the ongoing standoff between the rebel groups and government forces in Zamboanga looks like

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – This is how Day 5 of the fighting between government forces and followers of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founder Nur Misuari in Zamboanga looks like.

After several cancellations, President Benigno Aquino III finally arrived in Zamboanga City on Friday, September 13, to check the condition of the operating troops, including those hurt in the fighting.

Meanwhile, 3 areas were burning, including areas in the villages of Rio Hondo, Sta Barbara and Sta Catalina. Sporadic exchange of gunfire was happening in Lustre Street.

At around 3 pm, state security forces launched an assault to flush out rebels holed up in Sta Catalina. Seven APCs (armored personnel carrier) led the siege providing both cover and fire assistance for government troops.

Government snipers perched in rooftops took shots on targets inside the area.

MNLF rebels fought back, forcing the APCs to retreat several times. Soldiers said there were backpacks filled with explosives along the road.

The rebels also delivered 3 M79 rounds. Two overshot the APCs while the last round landed on the spot were medical personnel were staying.

Scores were injured, including at least 11 Red Cross responders.

Later in the evening, Vice-president Jejomar Binay announced that he and Misuari agreed to implement a ceasefire by midnight. – Rappler.com
