Abunales was assigned to the NBP, while undergoing an investigation in connection with a fatal shooting incident at the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro.

In the said incident, maximum security prisoner Roland Ho was shot to death at the Sablayan town proper June 14, 2013, after leaving his confinement area without authorization and an escort.
