ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — At least 8 Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels were killed in an encounter with government troops on Thursday, September 19, the military said.

“It happened during two separate incidents in Sta Barbara,” according to Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Col Rodrigo Gregorio.

Two rebels were killed in an encounter at 11:30 am with the Army’s 1st light reaction company (1LRC) at the back of a mosque in Sta Barbara.

Six rebels were killed in another encounter at 1:45 pm also with the 1LRC in another location in Sta Barbara.

The US-trained elite forces are conducting clearing operations in the remaining areas occupied by Commander Habier Malik and some of his followers. The military believes they are still holding some hostages.

President Benigno Aquino III has called on them to surrender.

A total of 15 rebels in Sta Catalina surrendered to combined police and military troops around 6:30 am on Thursday.
