ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – His parents are both overseas Filipino workers. They had high hopes for him, especially after he graduated in 2011 at the Philippine Military Academy.

But on his second year of military service as a member of the elite Scout Rangers, 2nd Lt Florencio Mikael Meneses was killed in a gun battle with rebels here. He was 27.

Meneses succumbed to gunshot wounds at 4:40 am Monday, September 23, at the Ciudad Zamboanga Hospital after getting wounded last Saturday, September 21, in Barangay Sta Catalina, the Army said.

He was conducting clearing operations in Barangay Sta Catalina last September 21 when shot in a firefight with members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), the Army added.
