MANILA, Philippines – Three Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) generals holding critical posts are retiring in November.

They are AFP deputy chief of staff Lt Gen Gregorio Macapagal, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) chief Lt Gen Rey Ardo, and  Philippine Army 2nd Infantry Division commander Maj Gen Nonato Alfredo Peralta.

Macapagal is the AFP’s 3rd highest official.

Ardo’s post is one of the most coveted positions in the Armed Forces. Based in Zamboanga City, Wesmincom supervises troops dealing with the Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Central Mindanao and the Abu Sayyaf Group and rogue Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) operating in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Peralta, on the other hand, supervises troops dealing mostly with the New People’s Army in Southern Tagalog. The Army 2nd Infantry Division is based in Tanay, Rizal.

The AFP has its own selection process, but President Benigno Aquino III will have the final say on the appointments.

“The process has already started and selections for these positions are now being considered. We just have to wait for the decison. The ultimate decision will always lie on the President,” according to Armed Forces spokesperson Lt Col Ramon Zagala. – Rappler.com
