Search for 140 dead in ‘world’s highest battlefield’ continues

After 2 weeks of rescue and recovery efforts, the search for bodies in Pakistan’s Gayari army base, 14,000 feet up in the mountains of Kashmir is on. A horrific avalanche hit the headquarters of the 6th Northern Light Infantry on April 7, burying alive 129 Pakistani army soldiers and 11 civilians. The Pakistani and Indian soldiers have been watching each other closely in the remote outpost for close to 3 decades. The Kashmir has been a source of tension between India and Pakistan which have been fighting since 1947 until a ceasefire in 2003. Over the years, both sides have lost lives more to the freezing temperatures and perilous conditions than actual combat. Members of the media were brought to the avalanche site on Thursday, April 19. It took a military plane, helicopters, 4×4 trucks and walking on foot to reach the site.
