MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – Twenty people were killed and 58 others injured on Saturday, October 19, in a pile-up on an unlit highway in Atimonan, Quezon province. 

The incident occured at around 1 am, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Managment Council said.

Nineteen were dead on the spot, while another one was declared dead on arrival at the Gumaca District Hospital.

The 7 vehicles involved in the collision include: two Isuzu Wing Van Trucks, an Isuzu Ref Van, a trailer truck, a Superlines bus, an Isarog Lines bus, and a DLTB bus.

According to the initial investigation, one of the Isuzu Wing Van Trucks experienced mechanical trouble and bumped the rear-portion of the Superlines bus it was following.

The Superlines bus then sideswiped the rest of the vehicles, all coming from the opposite direction of the road.

The bodies of the victims were arranged side by side on one lane of the road, covered only by banana leaves.

Victims were rushed first to Emil Joanna General Hospital and Dona Marta Memorial District Hospital in Atimonan. Others were transferred to the Gumaca District Hospital and the Jane County Hospital in Pagbilao due to the number of casualties.

Motorists going to and from Bicol can take the 3rd district route, passing through the folowing roads:

  • Padre Burgos
  • Agdangan
  • Pitogo

Warning signals have been installed, and policemen are deployed to reroute traffic.

The road accident occurred along Maharlika highway.
