Corrupt LGUs to blame for steep medicine prices

Filipinos have benefited from the devolved functions of local government units (LGUs). The devolution expedited the delivery of more nuanced services based on hyperlocal needs. But this has also raised issues of wasted money and the inefficient selection of purchased drugs. Under the current set-up, the mayor and supplier agree on a certain “jacked-up price” where both get their share from the extra amount added on top of the medicine’s real price. One mayor had asked for medicines that were not needed by his constituents, according to a doctor. This situation, prevalent in many LGUs, has disappointed young doctors who work in the provinces.
