LPA spotted off Surigao City

MANILA, Philippines – A potential cyclone has been spotted east of Surigao City, bringing with it moderate to heavy rain which may cause flashfloods and landslides. 

It was hovering 100 kilometers east of the Surigao del Norte capital in the northeastern portion of Mindanao at 4 am Saturday, November 23, according to state weather bureau PAGASA in its 5 am weather update.

A low pressure area (LPA) is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than that of surrounding areas. It may eventually develop into a cyclone. 

The LPA’s tail end is affecting Northern Luzon and is expected to create cloudy skies, bringing rain.

Palawan, the Visayas, the Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga regions in particular will experience moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, the province of Aurora, and the rest of Mimaropa and Mindanao can expect cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of Luzon will be visited by light rains. 

Luzon and the Visayas should brace for moderate to strong winds coming from the northeast. Coastal waters in these areas will thus be moderate to rough. Light to moderate winds will blow over the rest of the country. 

The LPA comes two weeks after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) made landfall in the Philippines, eventually carving out a path of destruction that has left 5,209 dead and caused P22.47 billion worth of damage to agriculture and infrastructure. – Rappler.com
