MANILA, Philippines – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday, April 27, ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to defer the demolition of informal settler communities in Metro Manila.

“We notified the police to defer demolitions until we have settled additional guidelines when police assistance is requested,” DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo said in a text message.

The review of the guidelines comes after Monday’s bloody demolition at the Silverio Compound in Paranaque City. One resident was killed by lone gunshot wound in the head. At least six others were injured.

The informal settlers blocked a road in the residential suburb of Parañaque, hurling large stones at police, armed with shields and truncheons, who were trying to disperse them.

The police denied that they shot the bullet that killed the resident. – Rappler.com
