Those who will violate the policy may be demoted or dismissed from service

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine army said on Monday, December 30 that it will strictly implement its policy against indiscriminate firing during the New Year celebrations.

“All unit commanders on the field are reminded to consistently monitor their respective subordinates on or off duty to ensure that this policy is strictly enforced, not only in the observance of this significant occasion but all throughout the coming year,” said Capt. Anthony Bacus, officer-in-charge of the Army Public Affairs Office.

Soldiers need not muzzle or cover their firearms, “because they know the repercussions if such policy will be violated,” said the press statement.

“It is clear to every Army personnel that firing their weapons indiscriminately is punishable under the Articles of War,” added the statement.

Those who will illegally discharge their firearms while welcoming 2014 may be demoted or dismissed from service.

Also, under Article 254 of the Revised Penal Code, violators will be meted a jail time of up to 6 years. – Rappler.com
