The suspects are believed to be targeting a police detachment in Carmen town, but are deterred by the presence of Civilian Volunteer Organization members

MANILA, Philippines – A grenade thrown at a church in Cotabato left 5 injured on New Year’s Eve, including a 6-year-old boy.

According to Captain Antonio Bulao, CMO officer of the 602nd Brigade, a hand grenade was thrown in Barangay Ugalingan in the town of Carmen at around 8:20 pm on Tuesday, December 31, by 3 unidentified perpetrators riding on two motorcycles.

The suspects were able to escape, and headed toward Kabacan, Cotabato.

Among the injured were Amy Tropa, 53; Chabilita Tropa, 12; Ading Tropa, 16; Jhonloyd Tropa, 6; and Marielle Montayer, 16. All 5 were taken for medical treatment to Kabacan Medical Specialist in Kabacan.

The blast site was cordoned off by the military as they await Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists for post blast investigation.

The incident is said to be connected to the harassment of the PNP Compact Detachment stationed at Barangay Ugalingan, also in Carmen, in early December.

The suspects were believed to be targeting the detachment, but they were deterred by the presence of Civilian Volunteer Organization members, and so directed the grenade to civilians. Rappler.com
