MANILA, Philippines – Fire razed at least 5 houses in a residential area in Barangay Krus na Ligas, between UP Village and the University of the Philippines, in Quezon City on Thursday afternoon, January 16.
According to Quezon City District Fire Marshall, Supt. Jesus Fernandez, the fire started at 2:30 pm in a two-storey house owned by Andrea Florencio Lego, 67, and spread to adjacent homes.
No one was hurt, but damage to property reached around P350,000, investigators said.
“Five houses were burned, but 8 families were affected,” Fernandez said. The fire reached 3rd alarm but was declared “fire out” as of 3:45 pm.
The fire was caused by a 10-year-old boy playing with a lighter inside their house.
The boy’s uncle, Antonio Sarabia, said he noticed smoke billowing from the second floor, where the boy and his 8-year-old brother were staying.
Sarabia rushed to save the children by destroying the padlocked door, but was not able to salvage anything from his house as he brought his nephews to a safe place nearby.
Sarabia said the children were left by themselves. Their parents Nicolo Lego and his wife were not around when the incident happened.
