MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III will try to convince local officials in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to support the yet-to-be created Bangsamoro political entity at an upcoming summit on Tuesday, February 11, in Davao.

According to Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr, the purpose of the president’s trip is to encourage the ARMM leaders to unite and help the peace process move toward the creation of the Bangsamoro political entity.

Coloma added that the ARMM is currently functioning in a transitional role, while the national government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) work out the foundations for a Bangsamoro Transitional Authority.

The President will also listen to the concerns of the local leaders on the peace process, Coloma added.

On January 29, the President met with the Bangsamoro Transitional Commission (BTC) in Malacañang and urged them to speed up the crafting of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

The law will need to be approved by the members of Congress and later via plebiscite. Should the law pass the plebiscite, it will dissolve the ARMM. – Rappler.com
