US General warns against escalating tension with China

US General Herbert Carlisle, commanding general of the US air forces in the Pacific, said the recent comments comparing China’s aggressiveness over disputed territory in the South China Sea to Germany’s ascension in the 1930s is “not helpful.” He cautioned both the Philippines and Japan that a de-escalation of tensions would be needed and that it needed to be done by all parties. This was in reaction to remarks by Philippine president Benigno S. Aquino III that compared China’s aggressive stance on the issue to Adolf Hitler’s claim to territory in Europe in 1938. Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also said Japan and China should avoid the fate of Germany and the United Kingdom, former allies that went to war. Carlisle urged all countries to work together to defuse tensions.
