UK flood victims angry at lack of help

Widespread flooding in Britain has raised the ire of a number of people who say the government response to the floods has been lacking. Residents in Datchet, England say they are waiting in vain for any substantial help from the government. “They supplied sandbags yesterday and we had the military here last night but there’s been nothing since then,” said David Cannon, a water-taxi driver. Datchet backs on to the famed playing fields of Eton, where British Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson went to school, and just a few kilometers from Queen Elizabeth II’s Windsor Castle. Driven by the wettest winter in England since 1766, the floods first hit southwest England about 7 weeks ago. But they are now creeping eastwards towards London, into the wealthy suburbs lining the River Thames which are the heartland of Cameron’s center-right Conservative party. “It’s pretty pathetic. There’s been no response whatsoever,” said Yvonne Marks, 62, as she grimly surveyed the scene in the wind and rain.
