Women’s ski-jumping lifts-off after long wait

The women’s ski jumping event went underway on Tuesday, February 11, after a long, controversial wait to gain Olympic recognition. Compared to men’s ski jumping, which has been a part of every Olympics since 1924, women’s ski jumping is a relatively new sport. The first world championships were held in 2009. In 2011, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the sport would make its medal debut in Sochi. Feedback from the ski jumping men has been overwhelmingly positive. “I’m glad that women have got the chance to compete at the Olympics,” said Japan’s Yuta Watase. “Women are competing along with men in other sports. Why shouldn’t they be in our sport as well?” said US jumper Nicholas Fairall.
