
Fans of the popular men’s magazine Sports Illustrated may be shocked to find out the latest bikini-clad girl in their infamous swimsuit edition isn’t real at all. In fact, she’s plastic. Barbie, the ubiquitous plastic children’s doll, will be gracing the inside pages of the magazine next week as part of a new advertising campaign by maker Mattel. The company is putting Barbie in a black-and-white striped swimsuit, similar to what it wore when it ws introduced in 1959, and featuring the tag line ‘unapologetic.’ AdAge reports that both the magazine and the doll maker have been criticized in the past for encouraging unrealistic expectations of women and their bodies. But Mattel believes that the ad campaign can counter these negative sentiments by unapologetically embracing Barbie’s dream girl looks.
