Australia admits spying ‘for the benefit of our friends’

Following reports that Australia tried to tap the phones of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and other top officials in 2009, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said they used intelligence material “for the benefit” of friends. Abbott refused to confirm a New York Times report, however, that said the Australian Signals Directorate eavesdropped on trade talks between the Indonesians and their US lawyers and then offered information to the US National Security Agency. The latest leak came as US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Indonesia on Sunday, February 16.
