The ruling Liberal Party (LP) will likely team up with the Nacionalista Party (NP) in the 2016 presidential elections – provided they agree on the selection of candidates. NP secretary-general and Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano is being eyed as a possible presidential or vice-presidential contender. In 2010, LP’s Benigno Aquino III and NP’s Manny Villar were bitter rivals for the presidency, but all that was forgotten in the 2013 senatorial polls. “If the process for choosing candidates is done well, there’s a big chance NP and LP will still be together in 2016,” Cayetano said in a mix of Filipino and English on ANC’s Headstart.
