MANILA, Philippines – Jailed former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo asked the Sandiganbayan Monday, March 10, for a 3-day furlough from April 4 to 6 to celebrate her 67th birthday in Lubao, Pampanga.

In a 4-page motion filed on her behalf by lawyer Modesto Ticman, Mrs Arroyo asked the court to allow her to spend her birthday with her constituents. Mrs Arroyo is an elected representative of Pampanga.

She’s under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City for plunder charges over the alleged misuse of P366 million worth of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office funds. Plunder is a non-bailable offense.

Only last month, the Sandiganbayan dismissed a motion for reconsideration by Arroyo’s lawyers that she be allowed to post bail since she’s sick and has no plans of being a fugitive.

Her lawyers Jose Flaminiano, Laurence Hector Arroyo, and Aufelene Anne Laxamana, said Arroyo is frail and requires regular therapy even after undergoing 3 operations on her cervical spine. – Rappler.com
