At least 3,387 families have been affected by flooding in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley due to heavy rains

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – At least 3,387 families have been affected by flooding in the provinces of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley due to heavy rains caused by a low pressure area that has developed into a tropical depression. (READ: Caloy: Signal no. 1 in 12 areas)

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said there were reports of flooding in the towns of Asuncion in Davao del Norte, and in Nabunturan in Compostela Valley, since March 19 due to the swelling of two major rivers systems.

About 330 families or 1,650 individuals have been evacuated from the flooded areas, the NDRRMC said.

Office of Civil Defense Region 11 director Loreto Rirao said many of the affected families have already returned to their houses as the flooding has subsided in their villages.

Rirao earlier advised residents to regularly monitor advisories and strictly observe safety measures, including pre-emptive evacuation to avoid injuries and casualties.

In Surigao del Norte, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chair Gilbert Gonzales said all local officials and emergency responders are now closely monitoring high-risk areas.

“All municipal and barangay disaster risk reduction and management offices were already advised to monitor flood and landslide prone communities,” Gonzales said.

As Tropical Depression Caloy moved closer to Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental, storm signal No. 1 was raised in Davao City and in the provinces of Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Northern part of Davao del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, North Cotabato, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental.

Small water crafts have been advised not to venture out in the sea due to high gale warning, Gonzales said.

Meanwhile, responders from Davao City’s Central 911 Unit, including its amphibious vehicles, are on standby to respond to any emergencies. The city government of Davao earlier committed its readiness to respond to any distress calls even outside the city. – Rappler.com
