MANILA, Philippines – Led by transport group PISTON, jeepney drivers and operators in Metro Manila will hold a protest caravan on Monday, March 24.

The group is seeking a P6-discount on diesel products for all public utility vehicles and the repeal of the motor vehicle plate standardization project due the following month, among other demands.

Starting at 8 am Monday, jeepney drivers will gather at the National Housing Authority in Quezon City and then head to Malacañang where they plan to give a letter to President Benigno Aquino III.

According to PISTON National President George San Mateo, simultaneous protests will also be held in Tuguegarao City, Baguio, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Albay, Sorsogon City, Naga, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Cebu, General Santos, Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

PUJ transport groups led by ACTO, FEJODAP, PASANG-MASDA, and LTOP filed a petition for a fare hike in December 2013.  After this, the groups filed a motion for a provisional fare increase of P0.50 from P8.00 to P8.50 for the first 4 kilometers in February 2014.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is scheduled to resolve the motion this week. Pending approval by the agency, the petitioners are prohibited from increasing fares. – Rappler.com/with a report from Raisa Serafica
