
MANILA, Philippines – Fifteen applicants for the Associate Justice post in the Supreme Court (SC) are set to be interviewed 7 days after the retirement of SC Associate Justice Roberto Abad.
This, after the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) scheduled the public interviews with contenders for Abad’s post on May 29 and 30.
Abad will leave the High Court on May 22 when he hits the retirement age of 70.
The JBC, which recommends appointees to the judiciary, is headed by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. The members include Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Senator Aquilino Pimentel III as Ex Officio members, retired CA Justice Aurora Santiago-Lagman representing the private sector, Jose Mejia representing the academe, and Maria Milagros N. Fernan-Cayosa representing the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
The JBC is expected to submit a shortlist of candidates to President Benigno Aquino III, who will be appointing the new High Court magistrate.
