3 civilians hurt in Maguindanao clash
Initial investigations show clan war as the reason behind the hostilities. Local officials, military, police, and MILF leaders intervene to end the hostilities

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – At least 3 civilians were injured after a local command of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) clashed with the group of a village chief in the town of Datu Piang in Maguindanao on Wednesday, April 23, a military official said.

Colonel Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the military’s 6th Infantry Division, said MILF members from the 106th Base Command led by Commander Akas Casim and the supporters of Barangay Balanaken chief Datu Salam Paglas exchanged gunfire in Sitio Kinudal at around 9:30 am.

The firefight halted at around 1 pm after Datu Piang Mayor Genuine Kamaong, together with the local police, military, and the MILF 118th Base Command under Ustadz Abdul Wahid Tundok intervened and urged the parties involved to end the hostilities.

Hermoso said initial investigations show clan war as the reason behind the hostilities.

The injured civilians were immediately brought to a clinic in Poblacion, Datu Piang, for treatment.

The government recently signed a peace pact with the rebel group raising optimism among the residents that peace would soon reign in the troubled region. – Rappler.com
