EDITORIAL CARTOON: Napoles and the 20 senators: Not me! Then who?
MANILA, Philippines – It’s a tragi-comedy, watching lawmakers and government officials – implicated in perhaps the country’s biggest political scandal in recent years – deny accusations hurled against them by Janet Lim Napoles. By now a household name because of her almost daily mentions in the media, the woman believed to be the mastermind of the pork barrel scam has turned political institutions upside down.
Not one of the 20 former and incumbent senators named by Napoles has admitted wrongdoing. On second thought, admitting to have received or accepted millions of pesos would have been self-incriminatory.
Napoles, the lawmakers, and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, who accepted her affidavits on May 12 and May 26, have created a spectacle that will be difficult to forget. A discernible pattern has been this: When identified or pointed to, deny to the hilt, come up with a counter-accusation, or better yet, be ready with derogatory and snide remarks.
But surely out of the 20 senators, Napoles could have been right with even just one? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. – Rappler.com
