Duterte has been consistently chosen by the NPA as the facilitator of the recent releases of cops, militiamen and soldiers captured by communist guerrillas in Southern Mindanao.

The NPA abducted the 5 last Friday, May 30, in Barangay New Leyte, Maco town in Compostela Valley. The guerrillas earlier accused the forestry workers of using drones to spy on them. (READ: Captured forest workers operated drones)

The captives, identified as Ken Wong, Chrisandro Favela, Tim Sabino, Nico Lasaca, and driver Jonas Loredo, were nabbed at around 2 pm Friday while allegedly operating drones in the area.

NPA Comval Davao Gulf Sub Regional Command spokesperson Daniel Ibarra said their initial investigation showed that the Sky Eye UAV was hired by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for its so-called greening program.

The NPA however said they would release the captives once the rebels are assured that Sky Eye would stop its “surveillance.”

The NPA has been waging Asia’s longest-running communist insurgency. Compostela Valley remains one of its remaining bailiwicks. – Rappler.com
