MANILA, Philippines – The House of Representatives has spent about P5.7 million for the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, according to House committee on accounts chairman Florencio “Bem” Noel of An Waray party list group.
Out of the P4.4 million already liquidated expenses, half went to food expenses while the other half went to office supplies and rental of equipment. Some P1.3-million have yet to be liquidated.
Noel said the expenses might increase a little bit more, but won’t likely exceed P6 million.
The original budget allocation was P5 million, the same budget that the House of Representatives allocated in 2000 for the impeachment of then President Joseph Estrada. The same budget was allocated for the aborted impeachment trial of former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.
The original P5-million budget was only a “benchmark,” said Noel, adding that their expenses are reasonable considering that the trial has dragged on for more than 4 months.
“We will eventually itemize the expenses and release it to the media, “he said. – Rappler.com
