MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III on Saturday, June 28, showed his solidarity with Filipino Muslims celebrating the start of the Holy month of Ramadan and hoped it would inspire Muslims to deepen their commitment to “fulfilling our shared vision of lasting, equitable progress.”
“Ramadan is a sacred period of reflection and worship. It is an opportunity for you to reinforce your discipline, self-control, and compassion – values which are integral to the tenets of Islam and universally vital to the development of each individual,” Aquino said. (WATCH: Stories of Ramadan)
The 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar Hijrah, observing Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. During this season, Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset. They also abstain from doing evil deeds and having evil thoughts. (READ: 5 facts about Ramadan)

Aquino said the celebration should pave the way to achieving peace in the region.
“Our solidarity enables us to learn from each other and create a more unified and harmonious nation where citizens of various beliefs and creeds can work together to uphold peace and harmony,” Aquino said.
On March 27, 2014, the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro was signed between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). This is expected to promote peace in Mindanao and the greater ASEAN region.
He added that there can be unity amidst diversity. “The Philippines continues to grow more robust as our communities make their diversity as a source of strength, open themselves up to new insights and welcome each other as one people.”
