Court: Cunanan a flight risk, can’t travel abroad
The court rejects the plea of Dennis Cunanan, one of the accused in the pork barrel scam and former head of the Technology Resource Center, to be allowed to travel to Japan and the US

MANILA, Philippines – Former Technology Resource Center (TRC) director general Dennis Cunanan will have to stay in the country and abide by a travel ban imposed on the 54 accused in the pork barrel scam.

Anti-graft court Sanidganbayan 5th division on Friday, July 4, denied his request to to be allowed to travel abroad. Justice Roland Jurado, 5th division chairman, said Cunanan is a flight risk.

In his manifestation and motion for leave of court to travel abroad, Cunanan said his duties as World Secretary General of Junior Chambers International (JCI) require him to be in Japan and the US on different dates. (READ: Dennis Cunanan to court: Let me travel abroad)

Cunanan asked the court to allow him to travel to Japan on July 7 to July 15 and to the US on July 20 to August 3.

Not needed

But prosecutors from the Office of the Ombudsman argued that Cunanan failed to establish that he is officially needed at the JCI events.

Cunanan was provisionally accepted to the Department of Justice Witness Protection Program in March. The Ombudsman in June rejected his bid to become state witness, but he has appealed the decision. (READ: Ombudsman: Cunanan can’t be state witness)

The 5th division is hearing the cases of Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr and his co-accused in the pork barrel scam.

Cunanan’s similar motions before the 1st and 3rd divisions, which is hearing Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada’s and Juan Ponce Enrile’s cases, have yet to be resolved.

The 3 opposition senators are accused of knowingly and financially gaining from allowing their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to fund fictitious projects of dubious non-governmental organizations linked to Janet Lim-Napoles. They are charged with plunder and graft.

Cunanan is a co-accused in select graft charges of the senators, particularly the ones involving disbursements to state firm TRC. –
