MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police is all set to accommodate Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes, former chief of staff of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, should the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan hear her plea and order her detention inside the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

Reyes is among the 5 charged with plunder for allegedly collecting millions of pesos in kickbacks when she helped ensure that her boss’ pork barrel would go to bogus non-governmental organizations controlled by Janet Lim Napoles.

Arrest warrants were issued by the Sandiganbayan on Friday, July 4, against Reyes, Enrile, and 3 others.

“The plan for Reyes has always been to put her in one of the female wards [of the Custodial Center],” PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac told reporters on Monday, July 7.

Reyes could have been detained inside the custodial center since Friday had she heeded the advice of police officials to surrender to them. She instead followed her lawyer’s counsel and went to the Sandiganbayan. As a result, she is now detained there.

On Friday, the court issued a minute resolution ordering her detention at a Quezon City jail, but asked the jail warden to first report if the facilities could accommodate the high-profile detainee. The warden told the court on Sunday, July 6, that it would not be able to accommodate Reyes.

Reyes has since asked the court to transfer her to the custodial center, considered a “three-star hotel” for detainees by human rights lawyers. Enrile, meanwhile, asked the Sandiganbayan to allow him to stay in the PNP General Hospital. 

The court has yet to issue commitment orders for Reyes and Enrile. 

Should the court order her detention at the custodial center, Reyes will be detained in one of the female wards. “We will have to find space for her. There’s conflict in the location because only men are in the ward,” said Sindac.

Female detainees inside the center are given their own cell. All in all, 75 people are detained inside the Crame jail. (IN PHOTOS: Senators’ detention center in Camp Crame) – Rappler.com
