Gigi Reyes needs psychiatric treatment – doctor
(UPDATED) Gigi Reyes returns to the Camp Bagong Diwa jail after a brief stay at the Philippine Heart Center

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) –  Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes is diagnosed with mixed anxiety disorder, said her attending physician Dr Anthony Lontoc.

In a 3-hour court hearing Tuesday afternoon, July 15, before anti-graft court Sandiganbayan, Lontoc was called to the witness stand to testify on Reyes’ medical condition.

He said Reyes was already previously diagnosed with anxiety disorder. He clarified, however, that mixed anxiety dosorder is even worse as it has the component of depression.

He added Reyes likewise had a suicidal tendency.

Lontoc recommended that Reyes be treated by a psychiatrist and continue to take the medication prescribed to her for her psychological disorder.

Charged with plunder and graft along with his longtime boss, detained Senator Juan Ponce Enrile and others, Reyes faces accusations she stole millions of government funds through a pork barrel scam that has turned into the country’s worst corruption scandal in recent history.

The 90-year-old Enrile is also suffering from various illnesses, prompting a hospital arrest for him at the Philippine National Police General Hospital in Camp Crame.

Reyes was brought back to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) female dormitory in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, at 11 pm Monday, July 14, after being discharged from the Philippine Heart Center (PHC).

‘Office’ in jail

While still in detention, Reyes has it better than the 138 other inmates committed to the BJMP female dormitory in Camp Bagong Diwa.

Reyes was given the BJMP office at the ground floor of the building all to herself, while her fellow detainees are at the 4th floor of the building sharing rooms with other detainees.

We “use our office as an improvised isolation room for her condition,” said BJMP jail warden Jundelina Jagunap during the Tuesday hearing.

The rest of the inmates in the BJMP female dormitory in Taguig City have to contend with a facility congested by almost 180%, with 30 to 40 prisoners in one room.

Reyes’ isolation was recommended by the BJMP’s roving psychiatrist.

Supplemental petition dismissed

Meanwhile, Reyes’ supplemental petition before the Supreme Court filed on Monday was dismissed for being “procedurally defective.”

The Court said the petition did not really supplement her earlier bid to stop her indictment.

The initial petition asked the Court to invalidate the Ombudsman’s finding of probable cause against her, as she was not furnished a copy of state witness Ruby Tuason’s affidavit during the preliminary investigation. – Rappler.com
