#GlendaPH: Marikina River down to normal level

MANILA, Philippines (6th UPDATE) – Residents of Marikina City know all too well that it doesn’t take a typhoon to bring floods to the Marikina valley. With Typhoon Glenda on its way out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Marikina River’s water level is back to a normal level.  

As of 5:58 pm Wednesday, July 16, the water level is down to 14.9 meters, according to the city’s Public Information Office. 

Dennis Sevalla, Communications Head of Marikina City’s command center, said there have been calls for preemptive evacuation since the water level reached 14.8 meters. The command center also received reports of evacuation in Barangay Malanday, Marikina City on Wednesday. 

The Marikina disaster management office reminds residents to strictly follow the city’s water level monitoring system (pictured above).

Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman also gave safety reminders to residents.

“As preparation for the typhoon, put your valuables in secure and high places, secure your roofs and other materials that might be blown away by the winds, and pack your necessities in case you need to evacuate. Let’s all be safe,” he said.

Glenda hit Metro Manila earlier than expected, with the eye of the typhoon located over Manila Bay at 8 am Wednesday. Manila, among other local government units, has already evacuated residents living in flood-prone communities. – Rappler.com
