MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Traffic on the southbound side of C5 was brought to a standstill after a 9-vehicle accident left at least one person dead early Monday, August 4.

A 14-wheeler truck reportedly rammed 8 vehicles along the major thoroughfare near the Kalayaan flyover area, in the Taguig-Makati border, just before dawn.

Reports said the truck was initially stalled in an inclined part of the road and was waiting to be towed when its brakes suddenly malfunctioned, hitting 8 other vehicles.

The truck then flipped on its side after hitting a wall, spilling its cargo of sand and blocking several lanes.

The driver and his companion were not in the vehicle when it happened, and were gone after the incident, radio dzMM reported.

At least one person died, and dzMM reported that it was a passenger in another truck that was hit by the 14-wheeler vehicle. 

Radio dzBB reported 7 other people were rushed to the Ospital ng Makati for emergency treatment.

The accident has caused a major traffic jam along the busy road and other roads connecting to it.

The MMDA reported that the accident site was cleared at around 10:28 am.
