MANILA, Philippines – The first Filipino rector of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) died on Friday, August 8. He was 78.
Caceres Archbishop Emeritus Leonardo Z. Legaspi, OP, former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, died at 5 am on Friday, the Feast of Saint Dominic, reported CBCP News.
An earlier version of the CBCP News report said that Legaspi had succumbed to lung cancer.
Legaspi became the first Filipino rector of the UST Central Seminary in 1968, and was appointed as the first Filipino rector of Asia’s oldest university in 1970.
He served as CBCP president from 1988 to 1991, and president of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines in 1991. – Rappler.com
