MANILA, Philippines – Tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan brushed off speculations that he might seek public office in 2016, particularly as running mate of Vice President Jejomar Binay, who has declared his intention to seek the highest post.

“Thank you. Di ba sabi ko na? Baka magalit na sa akin si Vice,” Pangilinan told reporters in a chance interview on Tuesday evening, September 9, after the ASEAN Business Awards at New World Makati Hotel.

(Thank you. I’ve made it clear [I’m not interested]. The Vice President might get hurt [if I have to repeat it].)

Pangilinan, chairman of telco giant Philippine Long Distance and Telephony Company, attended the awarding ceremony as one of the heads of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Philippines.

“Hindi ko iniisip ‘yun eh,” he said, when asked about his plans for the national elections in 2016. Binay said as early as March this year that he was considering Pangilinan as his vice presidential bet, but this is the first time the businessman was very categorical about his lack of interest.

In a video of the interview uploaded on InterkAksyon, the news portal of the TV station which Pangilinan chairs, the businessman said his only interests are business and sports. He said, “Wala naman akong alam sa politics.” (I don’t know anything about politics.)

What he’s concerned about for now is the central board meeting of the The International Basketball Federation or FIBA in Madrid this weekend.

I have to be back in Madrid this weekend because they’ve asked me to join the cetnral board of FIBA. So I have to get in there by friday night because the central board meets by Saturday morning,” said Pangilinan. – Mick Basa/Rappler.com
