DAVAO CITY, Philippines – After a flash flood engulfed several towns in Sarangani Province after a torrential rain Monday evening (June 11), relatives of 88 missing persons are still waiting for updates on search and rescue operations.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier said that two persons were also killed during the flash flood.

Soldiers and police retrieved two cadavers of fishermen identified as Segapo Talangin Cabigding, 61, and Rolando Mata, 45, during the rescue operations.

10th Infantry Division’s Civil Military Operations Chief Major Jake Obligado said that most of the reported missing individuals are fisherfolk from the municipality of Maasim.

He said that of the 88 reported missing, 86 are from Maasim while the other 2 are from Glan.

The military also declared that the search and rescue efforts of the government resulted in the rescue of 75 persons. Majority of the missing persons reported from Maasim, Obligado said, were fishermen.

Obligado said that 568 families are still in the shelter of different evacuation centers in the province.

He added that the disaster damaged 250 houses including 1 fish pond, 1 water reservoir and 3 fishing boats. It also left 11 cows, 5 carabaos, 5 horses and 7 goats killed.
